Why Abia Needs Its Own Airport
Currently, residents and businesses in Abia State rely on two neighbouring airports: Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu (approximately 130 km from Aba) and Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State (approximately 65 km from Aba). Neither offers convenient access for Abia's population or its large Igbo diaspora community.
The new airport is expected to serve Umuahia, the state capital, and Aba, the commercial hub, both of which generate significant air travel demand from trade, diaspora visits, and business activity.
Economic Significance
Aba is globally known for its textiles and garments manufacturing. An operational international airport would open direct export routes for Aba's manufacturers, reduce logistics costs, and attract inbound investment. The project is widely seen as a catalyst for the entire southeast Nigeria economy.
