About Umuahia

Umuahia is the administrative capital of Abia State in southeast Nigeria. The city serves as the political and governmental hub of the state, housing the Government House, state ministries, and the major federal institutions operating in Abia.

Compared to Aba, which is Abia State's commercial powerhouse, Umuahia has a calmer, more residential character. It is a pleasant city with good infrastructure by state capital standards and a strong sense of community among its largely Igbo-speaking population.

Getting to Umuahia (Air & Road)

Until Abia Airport opens in 2026, travelers can utilise three major neighboring airports. Port Harcourt International Airport (PHC) is a critical option, especially for those visiting Aba first, as it is only about 47 km from Aba and 95 km from Umuahia.

Umuahia is estimated to be approximately 30 to 45 km from the new Abia Airport site. Once access roads are complete, the journey is expected to take roughly 30 to 50 minutes by car.

• National War Museum: A premier historical site featuring Biafran "Ogbunigwe" launchers, armored tanks, and a naval warship, illustrating Nigeria's military evolution.
• Ojukwu Bunker: An underground wartime annex of the National War Museum, built 8 meters deep to house the Biafran leadership during the civil war.
