Airport Guide / Opening Date

When Will Abia Airport Open?

No confirmed opening date has been announced. Based on current construction progress, an operational opening within the next two to three years is the working estimate.

No Official Opening Date Confirmed

As of 2026, the Abia State Government has not published a specific opening date. Construction is ongoing. This page will be updated immediately when an official date is announced.

Current Estimate

Based on the current phase of construction, runway and taxiway works ongoing, and the remaining phases of terminal construction and airside systems installation, a realistic estimate places initial operations within the next two to three years from 2026. This assumes no significant delays to funding or contractor delivery.

For context, major airport projects in Nigeria have historically taken longer than initial targets. The Abia Airport project has benefited from sustained political commitment, which is the single largest determinant of delivery pace.

What Needs to Happen Before Opening

Several distinct milestones must be completed before Abia Airport can open to passengers:

  1. Runway completion and certification: The runway must meet Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) specifications and pass inspection.
  2. Terminal construction: Passenger processing facilities, including check-in, security, customs and arrivals, must be completed.
  3. Navigation and airside systems: Air traffic control, ILS, approach lighting and fuelling infrastructure are all prerequisites for operations.
  4. NCAA operational certification: The NCAA must conduct inspections and grant the airport an aerodrome licence.
  5. Airline commitment: At least one airline must publish a schedule and commence ticket sales for the airport to open meaningfully to the public.

International vs Domestic Opening

It is common for new Nigerian airports to open for domestic flights before international services begin. Domestic operations require a lower level of immigration, customs and security infrastructure, making them faster to establish. Abia Airport may follow this model, with domestic services preceding international routes to the UK and USA.
