Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu
Akanu Ibiam International Airport (IATA: ENU) is located approximately 7 km from Enugu city centre, in Enugu State. For travellers from Aba, it is currently the most accessible airport with international connections, though at approximately 130 km away, the road journey takes two to three hours depending on traffic.
Enugu Airport serves domestic routes to Lagos and Abuja, with periodic international services. Airlines including Air Peace and Arik Air have operated routes through ENU.
Why Abia Airport Will Change This
When Abia Airport opens, the distance disadvantage of Enugu Airport for Aba and Umuahia residents will be eliminated. The difference in journey time, from 2 to 3 hours via Enugu to under an hour via Abia, is significant for regular travellers, especially the Igbo diaspora who travel multiple times per year.
For cargo and freight, the advantage is even more pronounced. Aba's textile manufacturers currently face significant logistics overheads to reach any operational airport. A local airport would transform export economics.
When to Use Enugu Airport Now
Until Abia Airport opens, Enugu remains the best option for travellers from Aba or Umuahia who need international connections or the most frequent domestic schedules. Road transport from Aba to Enugu via the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway takes approximately two hours in normal traffic.
