Construction Update: Runway Earthworks Reach Advanced Stage

Lead contractor Craneburg Construction provides an update on the 2.8km Type 4D runway and perimeter fencing progress.

As of early 2026, construction activities at the Abia International Airport site have intensified. Lead contractor Craneburg Construction is currently focusing on the 2.8km runway, which forms the core of the phase-one development.

Current Progress

Earth-moving works, site clearing, and leveling for the runway are nearing completion. Simultaneously, the perimeter fencing of the 1,325-hectare site is underway to secure the facility and prevent encroachment.

Future Specifications

While the initial phase focuses on a Type 4D specification, provisions have been made for an eventual upgrade to a Type 4E runway (3.6km) to allow for the landing of larger international cargo carriers as the airport's trade volume grows.
