A New Gateway: Governor Otti Approves Accelerated Feasibility Study for Azumini Seaport

Abia State is taking its first monumental steps toward establishing a direct maritime corridor. Governor Alex Otti has officially approved an immediate feasibility study for the proposed Azumini–Obeaku Seaport and Inland Waterways Corridor project, moving the long-discussed dream closer to reality.

Partnering with Global Maritime Experts

The state government is collaborating on this critical phase with China Harbour Engineering Company Limited (CHEC). CHEC brings world-class expertise to the table, having successfully completed the highly acclaimed Lekki Deep Sea Port in Lagos. Recognizing the economic urgency of the project, Governor Otti directed the firm to accelerate their work, requesting the study be completed well ahead of their initial 6-to-7-month projection.

Navigating the Path to the Atlantic

The proposed seaport location along the Azumini Blue River axis sits just about 19 nautical miles (approximately 35 kilometers) from the high seas of the Atlantic Ocean. The comprehensive study will analyze technical, economic, and environmental factors, focusing heavily on the dredging specifications needed to open up the waterway for large commercial vessels.

A Vision for Seamless Southern Transit

For regional and international travelers, the development of the Azumini Seaport represents a master stroke in state-wide connectivity. Parallel to the technical study, the state has initiated the process to secure vital federal regulatory approvals from the Nigerian Ports Authority and the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy. Once fully realized, this project will complement the upcoming Abia State International Airport, turning Abia into a beautifully integrated sea-and-air multi-modal transport hub.
