Abia State International Airport is progressing through a phased construction programme. Below is a summary of known milestones based on verified government statements and site reports. Dates and phases will be updated as new information is confirmed.

Phase 1: Site Preparation and Land Clearing

Early-stage groundwork including land acquisition, site surveys and initial clearing operations commenced in the period prior to 2026. This phase established the physical foundation for runway and terminal construction.

Phase 2: Runway and Taxiway Construction

The primary runway and associated taxiway infrastructure represents the largest civil engineering element of the project. Work on this phase is ongoing as of 2026.

Phase 3: Terminal Building

The passenger terminal building is planned to accommodate both domestic and international flights. Detailed design and contractor selection for this phase have been announced by the Abia State government.

Phase 4: Airside Systems and Navigation

Air traffic control, navigation aids, approach lighting and refuelling infrastructure are required before the airport can seek operational certification from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

Expected Opening Date

The Abia State government has set targets for initial operations in the near to medium term. As with most large infrastructure projects in Nigeria, timelines are subject to revision.
